iPhone 5 - Frequencies Supported

Many people consider buying iPhone in USA and using it elsewhere in the world. The main driving factor is cost.

Here is some important information you should consider before buying iPhone 5 in USA and use globally.

There are 3 iphone5 models. ATT, Verizon/Sprint and the world model (sold only outside US).
The main difference is in the LTE frequency supported.
See http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html "Cellular and Wireless section).
http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/09/12/apple_to_sell_3_variants_of_iphone_5_for_international_lte_coverage

Verizon under contract is selling unlocked iPhone 5.
That means, you can insert nano-sim from any other carrier and start using it. You will only be restricted by LTE support.

An hidden link at apple site shows $650 for 16GB unlocked version.
http://www.apple.com/search/?q=iphone+5+factory+unlocked
But they are not yet available.

India specific info:

None of them support LTE frequency in India. India is in Band 40.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks
So you can buy any model above and use it in India on 3G. 3G frequencies on all 3 models are same.

India operators work mainly on 2 frequencies for voice (900 and 1800). For 3G they use 2100

Verizon models are the best bet for international use because they come unlocked. You can use in India without issue. ATT and Sprint ones, after purchase, you need to get them unlocked.

Big Bang and LHC

You say the world is created from Big Bang. So many things came together at that precise second and the wonder called universe was born.

Now compare this with the CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). CERN is trying to accelerate protons and collide them to study big bang. But the project was delayed multiple times because of minor problems. Problems which look very very small in common man eyes. Initially on September 19, 2008 because of a faulty electrical connection. In July 2009 because of vacuum leak. Again in November 2009 because a bread stick dropped by a bird which led to a temperature spike in the LHC's machinery.

Now tell me, if such small things can stop such a large project, how can the universe be created by chance?

Sports and DD aka Doordarshan

To whom ever it may concern.

Please think twice, for gods sake, before you award sports telecast to Doordarshan. They are the last guys you want to choose. Beijing Olympics is the latest example. We have seen it before too.

The coverage is bad, the commentary pathetic. Overall, you get a very bad product.

I would have never watched Fedrer, Nadal, Sampras, Agassi, Schumacher, Tiger woods or Hamilton if these events were to be shown on DD. They just make the program boring to watch. They do that to excellence. You can just see the program quality difference when you watch it on DD v/s Start Sports/ESPN

My hate has not started recently. Way back in 1998, when Football world cup was telecasted on DD, they found a new way. Deferred Live. That is, they time shift the program and show it. That is a live match from 7:00-8:40 PM will be shown from 9:00-11:00 PM. They would finish all regular masalas and telecast the game when they run out of ideas or all their technicians go home.

They have now moved to a new tactic of 'National Interest'. They want to live telecast all cricket matches in India. That is, even if any other channel has bagged the rights. I still don’t get what is 'National Interest' in it? I would have understood if they take this stance for hockey (that’s India’s national game). They never used to show the matches properly earlier. Only after cricket telecast became a commercial jackpot, DD came up with this 'National Interest' funda. At least the baboos should have the guts to say we want to telecast it for 'Commercial Interest'.

How should we sort the medal list at the Olympics??

Some newspapers have opted for the worst way to display the medal tally. May be they want to put USA on top of all.

See NBC (http://www.nbcolympics.com/) tally taken on 21st Aug 2008

From NY Times (http://2008games.nytimes.com/olympics/medals.asp) on 21st Aug 2008

CNN (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/olympics/2008/medals/tracker/) on 21st Aug 2008

They have sorted the list based on total medals received by the country. But most other sites including official Beijing Olympics site sort them based on number of gold, then silver and then bronze (a partial correct model).

From Official Beijing Olympics site (http://en.beijing2008.cn/) on 21st Aug 2008

BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/?ok) on 21st Aug 2008

Google on 21st Aug 2008

Reuters (http://www.reuters.com/news/sports/2008olympics/medals) on 21st Aug 2008

Sydney Morning Herald (http://www.smh.com.au/olympics/) on 21st Aug 2008

Aren’t 45 gold’s won by China worth more than the silver and bronze won by USA??

Suppose a county has won 15 gold’s and another country 16 bronzes, whom should we put first in the list??

See the irony of the list. NBC has put Chinese-Taipei which has won 3 bronze medals ahead of many other countries which has won gold and silver.

See Chinese-Taipei (NBC rank:47, Official Rank: 71) and Estonia (NBC rank:48, Official Rank: 39).

See Slovakia (NBC rank:36, Official Rank: 18) and Armenia (NBC rank:35, Official Rank: 70)!!!

Or Jamaica (NBC rank:22, Official Rank: 14) and Cuba (NBC rank:15, Official Rank: 28)

A more appropriate model would be to assign points to each of the medal. Say 5 points for gold, 3 for silver and 1 for bronze. And them calculate the total points for the country based on the formula

Total points = 5 * number of gold + 3 * number of silver + 1 * number of bronze.

This I think would do more justice than the current system

Jesse Owens, Hitler and Berlin Olympics of 1936 - A Truth

I am a fan of Owens and it has always hurt me of what happened to him in 1936. But recently I came across some articles of what truly happened at Berlin in 1936. Here it is for you to read. This is taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Owens. You can also find details at http://german.about.com/library/blgermyth10.htm

In 1936 Owens arrived in Berlin to compete for the United States in the Summer Olympics. Adolf Hitler was using the games to show the world a resurgent Nazi Germany. He and other government officials had high hopes German athletes would dominate the games with victories (the German athletes did indeed achieve a top of the table medal haul). Meanwhile, Nazi propaganda promoted concepts of "Aryan racial superiority" and depicted ethnic Africans as inferior

Owens surprised many by winning four gold medals: On August 3, 1936 he won the 100m sprint, defeating Ralph Metcalfe; on August 4, the long jump (later crediting friendly and helpful advice from German competitor Luz Long); on August 5, the 200m sprint; and, after he was added to the 4 x 100 m relay team, his fourth on August 9 (a performance not equaled until Carl Lewis won gold medals in the same events at the 1984 Summer Olympics).

The long jump victory is documented, along with many other 1936 events, in the 1938 film Olympia by Leni Riefenstahl.

On the first day, Hitler shook hands only with the German victors and then left the stadium. Olympic committee officials then insisted Hitler greet each and every medalist or none at all. Hitler opted for the latter and skipped all further medal presentations. On reports that Hitler had deliberately avoided acknowledging his victories, and had refused to shake his hand, Owens recounted:

Jesse Owens on the podium after winning the long jump at the 1936 Summer Olympics

“ When I passed the Chancellor he arose, waved his hand at me, and I waved back at him. I think the writers showed bad taste in criticizing the man of the hour in Germany. ”

He also stated: "Hitler didn't snub me—it was FDR who snubbed me. The president didn't even send me a telegram." Jesse Owens was never invited to the White House nor bestowed any honors by Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) or Harry S. Truman during their terms. In 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower acknowledged Owens' accomplishments, naming him an "Ambassador of Sports."

Owens was cheered enthusiastically by 110,000 people in Berlin's Olympic Stadium and later ordinary Germans sought his autograph when they saw him in the streets. Owens was allowed to travel with and stay in the same hotels as whites, an irony at the time given that blacks in the United States were denied equal rights. After a New York ticker-tape parade in his honor, Owens had to ride the freight elevator to attend his own reception at the Waldorf-Astoria.
